Man-made, Hiding

This is my second draft model. In this sketchup model the artist studio above ground is for Piccinini and the below ground studio is for Swallow. The model was inspired by the above sketch section. The gallery space is inside the shell of the above ground studio but the studio and the gallery space are disconnected from each other by the stairs and the corridors making up the studio space.

  1. Hi Laura,

First, nice clear scans of your work - good to see.

Your model looks interesting - you're thinking about how to get light into the space, which is good. Consider how the light conditions in the stair void might be different to those in the studio space.

I'm a little confused about which is the gallery space and which is the upper studio space. Take a cross section through the building looking the other way so this is clearer.

It seems the gallery space is just tucked in under the studio space, and not much articulation between the two. The gallery space is where members of the public might come to view the artists' works - as an individual show, a group show, or just private viewing. The entry sequence to this space needs to reflect its key role in the building.

The 'shiny' studio below needs more development. Consider how you can provide openings in the 'roof' of this space so that light shines into specific areas of the studio at different times of the day. This could inform what areas of the studio Piccinini uses at specific times of the day, and what she doesn in each space - different processes in her work might require lots of light, and others very little. Those cantilevered planes jutting out of the walls can be used to reflect light down into lower levels from an opening of some kind in the roof. Those same planes could incorporate stairs of different dimensions, scale, rake, etc. to allow you move down through the spaces. You should develop this idea.
